The University of Illinois at Chicago HIV/AIDS Community Clinic Network (UIC-HCCN), founded by Medical Director Dr. Richard Novak, has been providing high quality medical care for patients with HIV and AIDS since 1989. Our unique program utilizes a collaborative multidisciplinary team to provide services to approximately 1,200 patients at seven locations in Chicago; on campus and clinics located throughout the city on the North Side, Northwest Side, West Side, Mile Square Health Center, South Side, and Southeast Side. We provide a range of health services including outpatient medical care, mental health services, treatment adherence, gynecological care, nutritional assessments, and referrals to a range of medical and social service programs through program collaboration and linkages. All HIV based services are provided regardless of an individual's insurance status or income level. Services are available in both English and Spanish.

I am walking this year to remember one of the most influential people in my life, Joe R. McPeak. After fighting AIDS for over 17 years, Joe lost his battle to the disease December 13, 2010. During the nearly two decades with the disease, he was in five experimental trials that caused great pain and horrible side-effects. He never complained and stated that he felt it was his responsibility to participate in trials so that others would benefit.

Joe believed that there was never anything that he couldn't handle as long as God was in his life. He inspired me to join him in being baptized in the Episcopal Church. Joe lived his life full of love, respect, judgment free, and believed actions were more powerful than words. He gave without ever asking for anything in return. During the last days of his life, he was introduced to St. Edwards and Christ Episcopal Church and left this world in peace knowing something wonderful awaited him.

I feel that it is important to walk for all those who research, care for, and battle HIV/AIDS on a daily basis. May they we be inspired to continue their fight by the inspirational life of Joe R. McPeak and guide them to a cure.
